Atypical pneumonias in Ceylonese children.

چکیده
Although cases of primary non-bacterial pneumonia of unknown but probable vinal origin have been reported from Europe and America only meagre references to this condition have been made in Indian medical literature. Shone and Passmore (1943) have referred to an outbreak of pneumonitis associated with autohaemagglutination in Indian army personnel. No such cases have yet been reported from the island of Ceylon. The purpose of this paper is to record nine cases which conform to the description of 'atypical' pneumonias reported by workers in other countries (Golden, 1944; Dingle, 1947; Parker, Jolliffe and Finland, 1947; Scadding, 1951). The diagnosis of the first two cases was made at necropsy, and, as a result of these findings, sub sequent cases, where the clinical picture differed from that of bacterial pneumonias, were carefully investigated, particular attention being paid to the estimation of cold agglutinins in the serum and to radiological changes in the lungs.

Pneumonia due to viral and atypical organisms and their sequelae.
Most children presenting with pneumonia in the industrialised world will have a viral or 'atypical' organism. The clinical features of these 'atypical' pneumonias may be indistinguishable from bacterial pneumonia. New diagnostic techniques such as the polymerase chain reaction may help in diagnosis and choice of treatment, where appropriate. The pathological and clinical features of infection w...
متن کاملThe atypical pneumonias: clinical diagnosis and importance.
The most common atypical pneumonias are caused by three zoonotic pathogens, Chlamydia psittaci (psittacosis), Francisella tularensis (tularemia), and Coxiella burnetii (Q fever), and three nonzoonotic pathogens, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Legionella. These atypical agents, unlike the typical pathogens, often cause extrapulmonary manifestations. Atypical CAPs are systemic i...
